Richard qualified as a Legal Executive over 20 years ago and has significant experience in Employment Law and Commercial Litigation. With a background in Litigation, Richard joined SCE in January 2018 as a Senior Associate and Head of Litigation. He kindly took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about his role at SCE and for us to find out more about his life in law.
Tell us about your current role and how you got there?
I followed a very unconventional route to the law: a CILEx course at Leeds Metropolitan University, training at Gordons and over 20 years in a variety of City and High Street law firms, including a long stint at Walker Morris.
I am now a Senior Associate at SCE Solicitors, a boutique law firm specialising in Employment Law and Commercial Litigation. We have a small team of highly experienced lawyers and our business model enables us to provide cost-effective, bespoke advice to individuals and businesses. Our clients include individuals, employees, owner-managed businesses and multinational corporations.
When did you first become interested in law?
My analytical nature probably drew me to the law, but it wasn’t until my first role in a law firm that I appreciated that my character would actually be a good fit. I was drawn to the contentious aspects of the law – I guess I’ve always liked a good argument!
What do you love about your role? What are the challenges?
I love a healthy debate before a Judge, particularly that split second when they realise you are correct!
There are a number of challenges for lawyers currently, most notably understanding the market in which we now all operate and its commercial reality.
What has been your best career moment to date?
Defending a claim in the tribunal for a client whose Managing Director had a very high profile at the time, and as a result instructing high profile senior Counsel (used the month previous by Sir Alan Sugar), dealing with the press attention and then ultimately successfully negotiating a settlement in our favour.
What do your mornings look like?
Coffee, coffee and more coffee…
How do you achieve a work-life balance?
Generally, by trying to be as efficient as I can in the office so that I can try and leave my desk at a reasonable hour.

Coffee, cake and my delightful colleagues!
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
The South Pacific, in particular Rarotonga.
Anything oriental, pushed very close by fried chicken!
What does your ideal weekend involve?
A few drinks with friends and family, some decent food and a ride out on my bike in the Yorkshire Dales.
