Solicitor Advocate LLB (Hons), Higher Rights (Civil)

Samira Cakali is a pragmatic and approachable solicitor advocate with extensive contentious and non-contentious experience in the fields of employment law as well as civil litigation, within a range of commercial businesses from SME’s to multinationals as well as senior executives (including healthcare professionals and police officers). 

She founded the firm in Leeds in 2011 because she wanted to provide clients with high quality legal advice, on time, on budget and in a personal and supportive manner. The experience she gained in both a national and regional law practice enables her to do just that!

Samira is quick to grasp complex legal issues and this has led to her client’s describing her advocacy skills as being “invaluable for a pain free victorious day in court”.  

Her communication skills are further enhanced by her linguistic skills; she speaks fluent Urdu, French and is currently learning Turkish. 

To owner-managers she says:  “running my own legal practice enables me to understand the daily trials and tribulations for commercial businesses. So I always put together cost effective packages to enable owner-managers to protect their business, an example of this is myHR Plus, our outsourced HR & Employment Law Service. The question that I ask all businesses is, can you afford to be without us?” 

Samira is a member of the Leeds Law Society, Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) and Yorkshire and Humber Tribunal Users Group. She also undertakes pro bono work with the ELA and Leeds Community Enterprise (ELSIE for short).

In her spare time she is an avid runner and ran the London Marathon in 2007 raising over £1,700 for 'Get Kids Going'. She regularly participates in the 'Race for Life' and ran the Leeds Half Marathon in May 2012. She also enjoys the theatre, cooking, art and travelling.

Senior Associate, Chartered Legal Executive

Richard qualified as a Legal Executive over 20 years ago and has significant experience in Employment law and Litigation.

Richard acts for both employers and employees drafting and advising on settlement agreements, contracts of employment, consultancy agreements, directors service agreements and general workplace policies. He acts for commercial clients in the employment tribunal dealing with unfair dismissals, constructive dismissals and claims for discrimination. Richard acts for businesses of all sizes providing advice relating to a variety of commercial disputes including contractual disputes, partnership disputes, breach of director’s duties, insolvency and property disputes.

He also acts for individuals who have disputes over boundaries, rights of way, restrictive covenants, probate claims and trust of land disputes.

Richard is known for his pragmatic approach to disputes by swiftly identifying the legal issues and establishing client objectives. He has a reputation for his straight forward and no-nonsense approach and seeks to resolve disputes in the most cost-effective manner.

In his spare time, he is a keen cyclist enjoying both cycling on the road and off the beaten path through a forest or across the Yorkshire Dales.

Paralegal LLB (Hons)

Courtney Janotta is an employment law Paralegal with contentious and non-contentious experience of dealing with employment matters.

Courtney joined SCE Solicitors having previously worked for a Leeds-based firm specialising in civil litigation. She excels in client care and her ability to build a rapport with individuals and corporate clients, is second to none.

Presently she represents clients, in proceedings for:

  • Unfair dismissal (including constructive unfair dismissal);
  • Discrimination (including harassment and victimisation claims) due to age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation;
  • Breach of contract;
  • Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) (TUPE) Regulations 2006 and Whistleblowing claims.

In her spare time Courtney enjoys running as a member of Vegan Runners UK, hiking with her husband and their two dogs, writing for her vegan blog, crafting, and travelling off-the-beaten-path.

Paralegal LLB (Hons)

Emma joined SCE Solicitors in December 2017 as a Paralegal providing Employment and HR support.

Emma advises both employers and employees from a broad range of sections on contentious and non-contentious employment law issues. This involves advising on disciplinary and grievances, redundancies and termination of employment and settlement agreements, as well advising on and responding to internal employment disputes and tribunal claims.

Emma also assists Director and Solicitor-Advocate Samira Cakali in the running of the firm’s myHR service where she can support you in the day-to-day management of your staff.

Emma works closely with her clients to provide tailored advice, aiming to reduce and prevent the adverse consequences of employment disputes. Emma provides a uniquely direct, down to earth and friendly approach to all clients with a desire to build strong, lasting relationships.

Emma completed her LLPC Law degree with the Open University alongside being a Litigation Assistant at a local firm specialising in regulatory law. Emma is currently studying for her Legal Practice Course and Master of Laws in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Law in Leeds.

In what spare time Emma has, she enjoys spending time with her family and when she is not doing yoga you will find her with friends attempting to win the local pub quiz!

Tony Eckersley


Health and Safety Consultant

Antony Eckersley is a senior Health and Safety consultant, who has substantial experience in dealing with Health and Safety issues for high profile companies in the commercial and industrial sectors throughout the country. 

Since qualifying Antony has been a health and safety consultant for over fifteen years, prior to which he had an industrial background originally working in the printing industry. His qualifications include:

  • BSc (Hons) Occupational Health and Safety;
  • IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner;
  • OSHCR (Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register) Registered Consultant.

Antony’s expertise involves:        

  • Dealing with all aspects of health and safety related issues including carrying out risk assessments, manual handling and DSE assessments;
  • Preparing tailor made Health and Safety policies for companies and supplies Health and Safety advice to clients via the telephone and site visits;
  • Conducting independent accident investigations for clients and gives Health and Safety training as required.

Providing practical, user friendly advice is Antony’s strong point and is well known for it.

In his spare time Antony likes to keep fit by running 10km races including the Abbey Dash and the Leeds run for all and is an active supporter of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. He also enjoys amateur photography and reading a good thriller novel.

Sarah is a highly experienced Health and Safety Specialist with twenty four years’ experience across a broad range of industry sectors, including:

Sarah has the know-how and experience to interpret complex safety legislation in practical terms. Sarah helps busy managers in organisations by taking the hard work out of complying with complex Health & Safety legislation by providing realistic advice. Sarah is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOCSH).

Sarah also gives advice on how to reduce the likelihood and success of employer’s liability claims through her experience of working at 2 international insurance companies. This combined with her Health and Safety knowledge and experience make her the ideal person to help you with your Health and Safety requirements.

In her spare time Sarah likes to spend time with her family and also keeps active playing netball, running and attending exercise classes. Sarah is also involved with coaching a junior netball club and enjoys watching her son play rugby.

Will Barry - Business Development Consultant


Practice Manager

Jennifer Hoult is the firm’s Practice Manager and is responsible for the day to day running of the office. Jennifer’s previous experience in teaching and customer services has allowed her to excel in building client relationships and she is always eager to assist clients wherever she can.

Since joining SCE Solicitors Jennifer has focused on organising the team as well as continuing to develop the firms processes and procedures. Jennifer believes that a well organised and reflective team is essential within the workplace and ensures clients receive the best possible service.

In her spare time Jennifer enjoys spending time with her children and supporting them with their very time-consuming hobbies. She also enjoys spending time with extended family and friends as well as going to the gym and eating out.

Marketing Manager

Merewyn Sayers is the firms Marketing Manager and is responsible for the marketing communications and aiding the strategic direction of SCE Solicitors. Merewyn has dedicated her career to working with businesses, getting to know them and their marketplace, enabling them to work more effectively and strategically.

Merewyn has been part of the SCE team since October 2016 and amongst many other tasks has vastly improved the firm’s lead management system and is dedicated to continuously developing the process, ensuring that we deal with enquiries in a timely manner, as well as accurately report on the activity, enabling us to tailor our offering towards your needs.

Market Research and being Customer Centric is important to Merewyn and so underpins the strategic plans implemented, so watch out for your opinions being asked!

Outside of SCE Merewyn is very active, balancing another business promoting a collection of villages in Huddersfield, several voluntary positions including being a Trustee of a local city park, as well as being a mother and wife.

  • Gig Economy – Royal Mail Group Facing legal action from drivers

    The trend towards gig economy drivers and contractors demanding employment status rights will continue throughout 2018. This should come as no surprise when you consider the recent report published by parliamentary committees which determined nearly 1.6 million people work for gig-economy giants and find relatively little protection provided under current employment law due to their status. 

    We previously reported on the Uber drivers ongoing battle in August 2016, and the EAT decision in November 2017 if you haven’t been keeping up with our gig economy posts. 

    More recently, in December 2017, couriers at Parcelforce Worldwide commenced legal action against its parent group, Royal Mail Group Ltd, over failure to pay drivers the national minimum wage and holiday pay.& … more
